World Skills DAY TWO!

HUGE banner on the 7th floor :)

So it's the second day of worldskills! Well, as Clare and I had presentations, we sadly missed most of the competition going on :(

We rushed down to the Cooking skills competition when we were back!
I marvel at the creations they perfected in the oven.
Today, they have to whip up desserts!
I live by this saying, that's why I'm fat :)

This is the clock all the participants stare at while making their pastries.

They are given 4 hours each time to whip up their mind-blowing desserts to present to the judges, a time limit I am amazed at. As someone who appreciates dessert, I didn't know there was so much work that goes into each dessert!
While walking around the competition venue, as pictured below, I learned a lot of new things about desserts and have attained a finer appreciation for pastry chefs and patisseries everywhere.

I saw so many jaw-droppingly amazingly beautiful desserts, despite having a full lunch before heading into the venue, I wanted to eat their desserts.
I think that's the sign of a well-made dessert. To tempt someone who has no intention of eating, consume your dessert.
Of course, taste is not everything in a competition. How you present your final product accounts for a lot of the scores in the competition!

Pictured below is one of the top 3 chefs from Day One, Shaun Giam from SHATEC!

I interviewed one of the competitors, Edward Siew from Temasek Polytechnic.

Taken from Worldskills official site HERE.

Edward, who is currently in the Diploma for Culinary and Catering Management in Temasek Polytechnic, was delighted to be selected by his tutor to be the representative from TP at the World Skills Singapore 2012. His good friend Ang Yong Yi was selected alongside with him!
It was a struggle for both of the representatives from TP as they are both having their internship now. On their days off from their internship, they are unable to take a break from work, they have to rush over to school to prepare for this competition. They have endured this for a few months already and my heart goes out to them! Can you imagine having no rest period for months?
"I'm happy that it's over" says Edward. As an observer, I think that all that hard work is worth it! The pictures below show you the mouth-watering desserts that Edward has produced.

Putting the finishing touches!
I also have some photos of his friend Yong Yi's work!

I was very thankful for the Official Blogger pass today, because it allowed me access to places I usually can't go in, like the competition sites.
I would like to say a huge THANK you to all the participants of Cooking for putting up with us taking photos of you midway through your work and thank you for your patience and understanding, and THANK YOU for answering our interview questions so that we can blog about you :D
All the best for ALL of you!
(Even though everyone can't win lol)

I'm ending this post soon, the bloggers ordered pizza and I'm dying for a slice.
While I munch on pizza, I'll not leave you guys out, I'll end off with an image of their final masterpiece :D
Feast through the laptop screen! :P
As always, you can get additional information about WorldSkills Singapore at their official site at
