Cookies and Calories for Chinese New Year!

Its the period of time where you have a valid reason to get new clothes (YAY) and eat all you want without fear of criticism. Its when you see relatives you only see once a year and get money without working. Spend all day going to people’s houses and eating their goodies, get red packets and then leave.

Happy Chinese New Year!
You’re right! It’s the Chinese New Year period! And I’m going to tell you what are my favourite waist-expanders!
Ba Kwa
No Chinese New Year is complete without this barbecued delight!
This is Barbecued Pork. In Singlish, it’s called Ba Kwa. This Chinese New Year favourite was featured prominently in a local movie once, in 2002 called “I Not Stupid”. It’s tasty and juicy and sweet at the same time! It’s also very chewy and with each bite, flavours burst into your mouth (I know, they should ask me to write ad copy for them lol)

These crispy delights will make you go mmm!
These are Love Letters. The history of these is that they were a way for lovers to communicate in olden times – the edible quality of the messages that there would be no evidence left behind and consumption of the heartfelt message was also seen as a sign that the lover’s words had been taken to heart. Each bite taken leaves you with a smile on your face. I can eat 5 or 6 of these with no problem :) The Calorie Count for 100g of Love Letters is 430!

With a pineapple flavoured center, this treat is just too awesome for words
This is one sinful tart. With the gooey pineapple center, what’s not to love with the blend of pineapple and crust just right? The pineapple tart is not too sour and not too sweet, perfect for Goldilocks ;)

The Pineapple filling inside the tart is a perfect blend of awesome,
The covered pineapple tarts are what I prefer over the ones that look like sunflowers. Personally, I don’t like the filling being exposed. I prefer it hidden inside a layer of crust. I couldn’t find a better photo but you guys know what I’m talking about ;)

Also known as Spicy Shrimp Rolls or "Hay Bee Hiam", this deep fried happiness enters your mouth with a crunch!
One of the most usual villains hanging around the house, these mini pieces of spicy shrimp rolls bring smiles to happy people’s faces. For those who like spicy foods, this is the goodie for you. Wrapped in a thin layer of flour (skin) and fried to golden brown perfection, this is one snack you can catch with your mouth, haha!

These melt-in-your-mouth bite sized biscuits are an absolute delight!
This innocent looking Kueh Bangkit is one of the most feel good goodies of the lunar new year. This pure white goody makes grouchy people calmer and sad people happier. Trying to be ‘one of the goodies’, Kueh Bangkit is bite-sized (like me!) (and the rest of the new year goodies) and melts in your mouth the second you consume it!
The Calorie Count for 100g of Kueh Bangkit is 383!

Celebrate the lunar new year this year with the knowledge of knowing what to eat at relatives’ places! Here’s me wishing you a very happy new year!

P.S This is a reblog of a post I already did in 2012 for C4SM. Look at the original post HERE! ^^
